Africa: The Withdrawal of French Troops from Niger, a new step towards sovereignty

Following the denunciation of the military agreement signed with France, the Niger authorities ordered the withdrawal of French troops. Demonstrations demanding the departure of the French troops were frequent, but in the face of the military’s determination, France gave in. Macron’s arm wrestling match was thus lost by France.

The ruling military left Macron no choice but to engage in a showdown. The French troops and ambassador Sylvain Itté will be leaving.

The announcement of the departure of the French ambassador posted in Niamey has been warmly welcomed by the new authorities in Niger.

In a press release, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland made no secret of its delight at the French decision.

For the CNSP authorities, this is simply a historic moment and a new step towards sovereignty.

It was also an opportunity for them to issue a warning to other forces that could pose a threat to their country.

«This is a historic moment that bears witness to the determination and will of the people of Niger. Any person, institution or structure whose presence threatens the interests and projections of our country will have to leave the land of our ancestors, whether they like it or not. We celebrate the new step towards the sovereignty of Niger», hammered the communiqué of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.

Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have formed a defensive alliance. The people of Niger appear to be opposed to the return of President Bazoum, who is seen as a pawn of France.
