A Messi’s historic item on display at Bayern Munich Museum

A unique piece of memorabilia has graced the Bayern Munich museum for several years: a special jersey from Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

This item stands out as the sole artifact in the museum that does not belong to the club.

Bastian Schweinsteiger recently shared the story behind how Messi’s jersey came to be part of Bayern Munich’s collection. After Messi broke the record for the most goals scored in a calendar year in 2012, surpassing Gerd Müller’s long-standing record, he sent a jersey to the Bayern Munich legend.

Müller, deeply touched by the gesture, decided to donate the jersey to Bayern Munich.

Schweinsteiger recounted the moment when Müller, proudly wearing Messi’s jersey, showed it off at a Bayern training session, saying, “Look who sent me this jersey—it’s MESSI!”

Along with the jersey, Messi had included a letter to Müller, expressing his gratitude: “Thank you for inspiring me to push beyond my limits to break this historic record. This jersey is for you.”

Gerd Müller then placed the jersey in the Bayern Munich museum at Allianz Arena, making it a notable exception among the club’s artifacts.

Schweinsteiger emphasized Messi’s extraordinary impact on football, noting that every day he continues to achieve remarkable feats.

In 2012, Messi scored a record-breaking 91 goals in a single year, surpassing Müller’s previous record of 85 goals.
