Senegal: Embezzlement of covid funds, President Macky Sall, asks the Prime Minister to carefully examine the report of the Court of Auditors

President Macky Sall has finally come out of his silence concerning the embezzlement of covid funds estimated at 700 billion. He is committed to shedding light on the many financial misappropriations that have plagued several ministers and dignitaries of the government and that have raised the ire of Senegalese. President Macky Sall has instructed his Prime Minister Amadou Ba to carefully examine all the information published, the recommendations made and to take without delay the appropriate measures to enlighten the opinion on the elements contained in the said report of the Court of Accounts.

President Macky Sall has reiterated his commitment to transparency and the promotion of good governance and accountability, which are pillars of the Senegalese Emerging Plan. This firm position of the head of state was very much expected by Senegalese because the latest reports of the Court of Auditors, which had in its time pinned officials in power, were filed without action by President Macky Sall himself. This time, he seems to be listening to the demand of the Senegalese people that all light be shed on these misappropriations and that the authors be brought to justice.

The report of the Court of Auditors, published recently, points to embezzlement in the management of funds intended for the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The audit of the Court of Auditors of Senegal concerns the expenditures made in 2020 and 2021 in an amount of more than 740 billion CFA francs, financed by donors and the State, says the report entitled “Control of the management of the Response and Solidarity Fund against the effects of COVID-19, Management 2020 and 2021”.

The objective of this fund, set up by President Macky Sall, was to strengthen the country’s failing health system, support households, the diaspora, and private businesses, and maintain a proper supply of medical products, pharmaceuticals, and basic commodities to the country.
