Strategic meeting between Malian and Burkinabe Leaders to tackle security and development challenges

On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, President Assimi Goïta of Mali visited Burkina Faso for a working and friendly meeting with President Ibrahim Traoré.

The primary focus of their discussions was a strategic reassessment of the security issues that both nations are currently grappling with.

In a press briefing, President Goïta highlighted the key areas of their discussions: “We reviewed our bilateral cooperation, addressed security issues, and talked about economic development. We focused on the challenges we face and how to develop projects to manage these challenges.”

Assimi Goïta noted that security cooperation between Mali and Burkina Faso has significantly improved with Traoré’s leadership. “Our cooperation operates on three levels: joint training to enhance our land and air operational capacities, intelligence sharing between our agencies, and pooling our resources,” he explained.

He acknowledged the geopolitical complexities of terrorism, influenced by certain strategic partners.

This complexity underscores their decision to enhance cooperation through AES, sharing intelligence, and conducting joint operations, which have yielded significant results.

The two leaders also explored development issues, discussing agriculture, trade, energy, and industry to further strengthen their countries’ economic ties.
