Spain defeats Italy 1-0 to secure spot in Euro 2024 round of 16

In a highly anticipated Group B clash at Euro 2024, Spain triumphed over Italy with a 1-0 victory on Thursday night, securing their place in the knockout stages.

Both teams entered the match as group favorites, having previously defeated Croatia (3-0) and Albania (2-1) respectively.

Spain dominated the first half, controlling possession and creating numerous chances, but struggled to convert against Italy’s strong defense and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Despite nine attempts, Spain couldn’t break the deadlock, while Italy, with less than 40% possession, managed only one shot.

The second half saw Spain maintain their dominance, and they finally found the breakthrough in the 55th minute when Riccardo Calafiori scored an own goal under pressure from Nico Williams’ cross.

Spain continued to threaten, with Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz, and Lamine Yamal all coming close to doubling the lead.

Nico Williams also hit the crossbar in the 70th minute.

Spain successfully defended their narrow lead in the final 20 minutes, securing the win and top spot in the group with six points from two matches.

This victory ensures Spain’s qualification for the  Euro 2024 round of 16. Italy, with three points, will face a decisive match against Croatia, who have one point and could overtake Italy with a win.
