Newcastle-PSG: Paris’s largest defeat since the remontada

Due to its magnitude, the defeat in Newcastle represents a record in several respects for PSG in the Champions League.

Did the final score truly reflect the gap between Newcastle and PSG (4-1) on Wednesday?

Not according to Luis Enrique, who finds the result «exaggerated» or «not very accurate», even though he does not dispute that the Magpies «deserved their victory».

One thing is certain: the capital club had never suffered such a heavy defeat in the group stage of the Champions League under QSI.

In fact, the Red and Blue had not conceded four goals in the group stage of the Champions League since Deportivo La Coruña in… 2000-01 (a 4-3 defeat), under the management of Luis Fernandez at the time, long before the arrival of the Qataris at the helm of the club in 2011.

It’s worth noting that PSG hadn’t suffered such a setback since the «remontada» and that 6-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16, in 2017.

Furthermore, this 4-1 loss against Newcastle represents the second-largest European defeat for Paris under QSI.

Last but not least, PSG had not conceded four goals in any competition since a wildly entertaining draw at Amiens in 2000 (4-4).

Newcastle-PSG, a historic match. Not in the right way…
