Algeria has withdrawn its bid to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals

Algeria has decided to withdraw its bid to host the 2025 and 2027 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as announced by the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) on Tuesday, just a day before the host countries were set to be announced.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) officially communicated to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) its decision to withdraw Algeria’s candidacy to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025 and 2027, according to the federation’s statement.

For the 2025 edition, Algeria was competing against Morocco and a joint bid presented by Benin and Nigeria. As for the 2027 tournament, Algeria was up against Senegal and Botswana, along with a joint candidacy from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

«This withdrawal is motivated by FAF’s new approach to the development strategy of football in Algeria», the Federation further explained.

Interestingly, this announcement coincided with the installation of the new FAF president, Walid Sadi, on the same day.

According to the statement, the FAF will now focus its efforts on restructuring and revitalizing football in Algeria, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the development of African football.

The CAF Executive Committee, the governing body for African football, is scheduled to convene in Cairo on Wednesday.

During this meeting, CAF President Patrice Motsepe from South Africa is expected to reveal the host countries for the 2025 and 2027 AFCON editions in a press conference.
