Mali: President Assimi GOÏTA and his government perform a noble act in memory of the soldiers and civilians who fell victim to the recent jihadist attacks

Colonel Assimi GOÏTA had declared three days of national mourning on Friday, the day after terrible jihadist attacks that shook the country. Indeed, a week ago, deadly jihadist attacks were perpetrated against a passenger boat in Timbuktu on the Niger River and against military bases in towns in the Gao region in the north of the country.

A total of 64 people were killed, including 15 soldiers, and many others were wounded. The retaliation resulted in the neutralisation of around fifty terrorists.

In addition to these three days of national mourning declaration, important decisions were also taken at the weekly Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday September 13th, 2023, chaired by the Head of State.

Firstly, Colonel Assimi GOÏTA expressed his dismay at the loss of human life and the civilian and military injuries caused by these jihadist attacks.

He paid tribute to the memory of the martyrs of these horrific acts, offered his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

In terms of decisions, the President of the transition, Assimi GOÏTA, decided that the commemoration of the country’s independence on 22 September would be sober and in a spirit of national revival.

The financial resources earmarked for the independence celebrations will then be distributed to the victims and families bereaved by these terrorist acts as a gesture of assistance and support.

The Malian people need to be remobilised and determined to support and encourage the defence and security forces in this tough battle against jihadist groups.
