AES/ Sahel Confederation puts youth at the heart of its Pan-African vision
On Friday, 27 June 2026, President of Faso and President of the Sahel States Confederation (AES), Captain Ibrahim Traoré, received a high-level delegation of youth and sports ministers from member states. The meeting carries powerful symbolism, firmly placing youth at the centre of the pan-African project under construction.
The delegation, led by Burkinabe Youth Minister Annick Lydie Djouma Pikbougoum, included Mali’s Minister of Youth and Sports Abdoul Kassim Ibrahim Fomba, who served as spokesperson, and representatives from Niger.
Their presence in Ouagadougou coincided with the ministerial meeting on youth and sports, but they specifically sought the President’s guidance on strategic orientations.
“Most of the AES Confederation’s population is young, and today this youth stands at the heart of the action and mission of our highest authorities,” Fomba declared on behalf of the delegation. The statement resonates as a political programme.
In a region where over half the population is under twenty, investing in youth is not optional it is the essential condition for lasting sovereignty.
Education, training, civic engagement, and sport as a vehicle for cohesion and collective identity all represent levers the AES intends to activate in a coordinated, sovereign manner.
This presidential audience marks an important step in structuring youth policies at the confederal level.
It confirms that the AES builds not only on military or economic agreements but on a comprehensive societal project where youth are called not to endure history but to write it.
