Gabon: Nationwide population census, towards more targeted public policies

Gabon is set to undertake an operation of critical national importance. From January 25 to February 15, 2026, the Ministry of Planning and Prospective will conduct the main phase of the Nationwide Population and Housing Census (RGPL). This large-scale undertaking, which concerns every resident Gabonese and foreign alike is far more than a simple headcount. It constitutes the indispensable foundation for building public policy over the coming decades.

In a context of economic and social transformation, having precise and up-to-date data is essential.

With the last comprehensive census dating back several years, the 2026 RGPL will offer an accurate and detailed snapshot of Gabonese society.

It will provide exact knowledge of the population’s size, geographic distribution, age and gender composition, as well as living conditions particularly through the “housing” component.

These figures are not an end in themselves, but the starting point for all effective planning.

The relevance of this operation is measured by its concrete utility. The census results will guide decisions in key sectors: where to build new schools, health centers, or infrastructure; how to tailor public services to the real needs of neighborhoods and provinces; what housing policies to implement.

The census will provide the answers. It is also crucial for electoral districting, the allocation of state resources, and the assessment of employment needs.

For the private sector, this data is invaluable for market analysis and rational investment.

The success of the RGPL depends on the participation and trust of the entire population.

The ministry assures that all collected information is strictly confidential and protected by law, to be used solely for producing anonymous statistics.

Identifiable census agents carrying official cards will visit households. Welcoming them and providing accurate responses is an essential civic act.

The 2026 General Census is a large-scale technical operation, but above all a national project.

It aims to equip Gabon with a reliable compass to navigate the future, building development that corresponds to the realities and aspirations of its people.

Each person’s contribution is a stone added to this collective endeavour.
