Burkina-Faso: Ferraille actors support the war effort.

Responding favourably to the call for solidarity and contribution to the war effort, launched by President Traoré, the National Organisation of Scrap Metal Dealers of Burkina (ONCFB) and the National Union of Scrap Metal Dealers of Burkina Faso (SNCFB) organised this Wednesday, 4 January 2023, at the Bourse du Travail in Ouagadougou, two charity activities: a blood collection session and the payment of 10,000,000 CFA francs to the Treasury.

The president of the National Organisation of Scrap Metal Dealers of Burkina, Emmanuel Dianda, explained that the idea of collecting blood is to support patients who are in need and to alleviate the problem of lack of blood in hospitals and clinics, which is the cause of many avoidable deaths: “We saw the idea of coming to give our blood to save lives. (…) We noticed that in hospitals and clinics, there are sometimes shortages of blood. So, in our programme, we said that we can also help the government with this blood donation,” he said.

According to Emmanuel Dianda, the members of ONCFB and SNCFB intend to mobilise blood every 3 months to help the National Blood Transfusion Centre (CNTS): “We have planned to donate one hundred bags. (…) We intend to renew the blood collection every three months,” he said.

Incited by the call of the two organisations, a scrap metal dealer in the Pissy district named Noël Congo said that it was the first time for him to come and donate blood for the defence and security forces as well as the sick in need. “I give my blood because we see that there are many wounded in the ranks of our defence and security forces who are at the front. And also, during the time of malaria, we really need blood to save lives,” he said.

It should be noted that during this blood collection session, the leaders of the National Organisation of Scrap Metal Dealers of Burkina (ONCFB) and the National Union of Scrap Metal Dealers of Burkina Faso (SNCFB) went to the Treasury to pay the sum of 10 million CFA francs to contribute to the war effort.

Emmanuel Dianda said that scrap metal dealers from several regions of Burkina Faso have mobilised to support the war effort, following the appeal by the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré: “We got the sum of 10,000,000 CFA francs to support the government. And we left this morning to the Treasury to pay this sum in cash,” he said.
