DRC: President Félix Tshisekedi’s guidelines for newly elected governors

On Monday, June 24, 2024, during a meeting with a delegation of newly elected provincial governors, President Félix Tshisekedi expressed his expectations through new directives that will characterize governance over the next five years.

According to the State’s communication cell, these were the governors and vice-governors of the provinces of Kinshasa, Kwango, Haut-Katanga, Kasaï-Oriental, Kongo-Central, Kasaï, Mongala, Lualaba (vice), Haut-Lomami, Lomami, and Tshuapa.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the governor of Haut-Katanga, Jacques Kyabula Katwe, revealed that the head of state asked them to be governors who align with his vision. « The President of the Republic wants to see governors who respond to his vision, he wants to see governors who are on the ground and not in offices. We will apply this instruction to be close to our population in order to provide solutions to the problems that characterize our society », declared Jacques Kyabula Katwe, as reported by President Félix Tshisekedi’s communication cell.

Before this meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior, Security, Decentralization, and Customary Affairs, Jacquemain Shabani Lukoo, informed the council that a total of 15 elected and presidentially appointed provincial governors have been notified to officially start their mandates in their jurisdictions.

During an informational session with the newly elected governors and vice-governors on Wednesday, June 19, the new supervising minister emphasized security and local development. On the security front, he recommended strengthening border security and maintaining public order. This involves implementing secure governance through a provincial and local security committee comprising state security services and relevant civil society associations.
