Tech / Business: Meta Employees fired for misuse of meal vouchers amid wider Job cuts

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has dismissed several employees for violating the company’s meal voucher policy, according to reports. Workers were allegedly using the vouchers—intended for meals ordered through Grubhub—to purchase non-food items such as toothpaste and washing powder.

In addition to these breaches, some employees reportedly shared their meal vouchers with others or exceeded the budget allocated for meals. Meta provides staff with daily credits of $25 for lunch, $20 for breakfast, and $25 for dinner.

Posts on Blind, an anonymous work social media platform, suggest that over 30 employees were terminated for these violations.

While some workers claim they received warnings, others insist they were dismissed without prior notice, even after adhering to the guidelines.

This incident comes as Meta implements broader layoffs across its divisions, including at WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, its virtual reality arm responsible for the Oculus headset.

Former Meta security engineer Jane Manchun Wong confirmed on social media that she was among those affected by the recent job cuts.

Meta has not commented specifically on the meal voucher firings but acknowledged ongoing adjustments within the company.

A spokesperson explained that changes are being made to align resources with Meta’s long-term strategic goals, which include relocating some teams and reassigning employees to new roles. The company is reportedly working to find new opportunities for impacted staff.
