Omar al-Bashir transferred to Hospital amid ongoing health concerns and conflict in Sudan

Former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted from power five years ago, has been transferred from prison due to health concerns, according to reports released on Tuesday, September 24.

The 80-year-old was moved on September 19 from his detention facility in northern Omdurman to Merowe Hospital in a neighboring state.

The transfer, requested by his legal team, was prompted by age-related health complications and the lack of adequate medical care at the Wadi Seidna military base where he was previously held.

Along with al-Bashir, two of his former ministers, the ex-Defense Minister and the former Sports Minister, were also relocated for treatment.

This comes just weeks after al-Bashir’s former vice president was similarly transferred to the same hospital, 450 kilometers from Khartoum.

These moves are taking place against the backdrop of Sudan’s ongoing conflict between rival military factions, which has now entered its 17th month.
