Burkina Faso: Council of Ministers adopts decrees to strengthen the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing

On Thursday, under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré,  the Council of Ministers of Burkina Faso convened to review and approve several strategic reports aimed at enhancing the country’s governance and security framework.

Among the significant decisions made, two key decrees related to the Ministry of Economy and Finance were announced by the government’s spokesperson, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.

The first decree introduces a draft law focused on combating money laundering, terrorist financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction within Burkina Faso.

This legislative initiative seeks to align national laws with the directives established by the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), which mandates stringent measures to tackle these financial crimes that are often intertwined with regional insecurity.

Strengthening this legislative framework is critical to curbing criminal activities that fund terrorism, a pressing threat for both Burkina Faso and the broader Sahel region.

The proposed law aims to enhance coordination among national stakeholders in the fight against terrorism while improving oversight of suspicious financial transactions.

By adopting these decrees, Burkina Faso reaffirms its commitment to proactively addressing the security and economic challenges it faces.

This move is part of a broader regional and international effort to secure financial systems and combat the spread of weapons of mass destruction, thereby contributing to the stability of both the country and the surrounding region.
