Niger: Government limits private school fees to combat disparities

Niamey, July 18, 2025 – In response to the continuous rise in tuition fees and the significant disparities observed between institutions of the same level, the Nigerien government has decided to take action. Meeting in the Council of Ministers under the presidency of General Abdourahamane Tiani, Head of State, the executive adopted a draft decree aimed at regulating tuition fees in private schools and training institutions.

This measure is part of the implementation of Axis 2 of the presidential program, titled “Inclusive Development of Human Capital”, which prioritizes education and training as a strategic focus.

According to the final press release of the Council of Ministers, a national ad hoc committee was tasked with assessing the current tuition fees charged by private institutions. Its findings revealed considerable and unjustified discrepancies, highlighting the urgent need for state intervention.

The new regulation has a twofold objective: to curb the unjustified yearly increase in school fees, and to correct disparities between private institutions that offer comparable educational services.

Through this measure, the government seeks to ensure better access to education and to strengthen equity among learners, regardless of the private institution they attend.
