Mali Establishes New Military Unit to Combat Terrorism: the Rapid Intervention Force of the Armed Forces (FIRA)
Mali has a new military unit, the Rapid Intervention Force of the Armed Forces (FIRA), created to strengthen the fight against terrorism. A presidential decree has formalized the establishment of this entity.
The military regime led by Colonel Assimi Goïta has issued a decree establishing the Rapid Intervention Force of the Armed Forces (FIRA). The decision aims to enhance Mali’s internal security, which has been marked by terrorist attacks, according to the head of state. The unit is placed under the authority of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. Its mission is to « plan, coordinate, and conduct operations aimed at achieving decisive operational effects ».
As stated in article 3 of the decree, FIRA will also be tasked with « fighting against terrorist or criminal organizations, participating in hostage rescue operations, protecting high-ranking military and civilian officials as well as sensitive installations, and supplementing the Special Forces as needed ».
Regarding its command, FIRA will be led by a commander, appointed by presidential decree upon the proposal of the Minister of Armed Forces, with the title of Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army. The commander will be assisted by a deputy commander, who will also be appointed by decree.
The unit will have the authority to intervene across the national territory to repel any action threatening the defense and integrity of the Malian territory.
Details regarding the organization and functioning of FIRA will be determined by the Minister of Armed Forces through an order, as stipulated in article 6 of the decree.
