Burkina Faso : President Ibrahim Traoré pursues his vision of Food Self-Sufficiency through fish stocking at the Samandéni Dam
President Ibrahim Traoré’s unwavering commitment to food self-sufficiency is once again being realized with the fish stocking operation carried out by the Ministry of Fisheries. On April 12, 2024, this initiative came to life with the installation of six floating cages on the Samandéni dam, demonstrating a significant step towards achieving this crucial objective for the well-being of the people.
This strategic operation aims to increase the production of marketable fish, essential for the country’s food security. The floating cages serve as nurseries where fingerlings are released and raised to maturity.
Impressive figures from the ministry’s communication services reveal the magnitude of this endeavor: each cage is expected to produce 9 tons of marketable fish per cycle, generating a significant income of 18 million CFA francs in just four months. Moreover, with the possibility of realizing up to three cycles per year, the economic benefits for operators are considerable.
The production potential of the Samandéni dam is colossal, capable of accommodating up to 500 operators. With optimal exploitation, this natural resource has the capacity to provide up to 70 thousand tons of fish per year, thus meeting the growing needs of the population for animal proteins.
The Director General of Fisheries also emphasizes the availability of the fingerlings necessary to support this enterprise. This assurance of fingerling supply further strengthens the feasibility and sustainability of this initiative, offering a promising outlook for the future of national food security.
The fish stocking operation at the Samandéni dam represents a significant advancement in the realization of President Ibrahim Traoré’s vision for sustainable food self-sufficiency. This strategic initiative demonstrates the government’s determined commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the population, while paving the way for a future where food security is guaranteed for all.
