Togo : Faure Gnassingbé and Akinwumi Adesina discuss Togo-AfDB partnership for Socio-Economic development

On February 27, 2024, in Lomé, the President of the Togolese Republic, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, held a meeting with Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group.

Discussions primarily focused on the prospects of partnership between Togo and this pan-African financial institution, in line with the President’s vision for industrialization and the development of socio-economic infrastructure.

Adesina stated: « I discussed with the President of the Republic his vision for the industrialization of the country, and how the AfDB and its partners can invest in infrastructure such as the Lomé-Cinkassé road, a crucial corridor requiring an investment of $2.9 billion. We are currently mobilizing investors for this project ».

In addition to road infrastructure, the two leaders discussed the AfDB’s interest in investing in healthcare infrastructure in Togo.

Adesina also encouraged AfDB partners to support Togo’s policy of improving the healthcare system to ensure increased access to quality care for the population.

Mobilizing private sector resources to optimize fertilizer production from phosphate was also at the heart of the discussions.

The AfDB is a strategic partner of Togo, with interventions aligned with the Country Strategy Paper 2021-2026, focusing on the development of inclusive growth poles, social inclusion policies, and strengthening financial and sectoral governance.

Currently, the AfDB portfolio in Togo includes several major projects, including agro-poles, the development of agro-industries, road rehabilitation, and renewable energies.
