DRC : Belgium calls on armed groups to cease violence
The situation in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo remains tense, causing concerns and outrage worldwide.
Belgium, deeply concerned about the renewed upsurge of atrocities by armed groups in North Kivu in eastern DRC, called for an end to the violence in a statement signed by the Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The statement highlighted the massive displacement of populations, with over 5.5 million people displaced in the East of the DRC, including 2.5 million in North Kivu alone. The statement urged armed groups to halt these acts of violence.
« The Rwanda must cease all support to the M23 », the statement added, emphasizing that Belgium will continue to support the DRC in its efforts.
Belgium also condemned any attacks against MONUSCO, noting that numerous human rights violations were also being committed.
Saturday, February 10, saw violent incidents, with protests targeting diplomatic representations and MINUSCO, to protest what they perceive as the international community’s indifference to the situation in the East of the DRC.
They reproached them for issuing mere statements while the rebel movement allegedly supported by Rwanda spreads death and devastation among the populations of the eastern provinces of their country.
This conflict in the DRC has been ongoing for several years, underscoring the need to address its root causes. However, the solution to any conflict, regardless of its nature, is never solely military. Diplomatic efforts must be revitalized to ensure the security of the Congolese people.
