UN : Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a Solution for Development and Global Challenges

At the United Nations headquarters in New York, the American ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and her Moroccan counterpart, Omar Hilale, presented the first UN resolution on artificial intelligence (AI) to the international press on Thursday.

According to reports, American ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield highlighted the revolutionary potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in a joint statement with 40 other member states. She emphasized that AI has « tremendous potential to shape our economies, society, and the world for the better ».

On March 21st, a resolution introduced by the United States will be put to a vote. This resolution aims to ensure that the benefits of AI « extend across the world to countries at all levels of development ».

In this statement, the ambassador also called on member states to promote safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems to address global challenges, including those related to poverty, global health, food security, climate, energy, and education.

Thomas-Greenfield stressed the need to bridge AI gaps between and within countries through capacity-building and increased digital literacy. She underscored that consensus on this issue was crucial to extending the benefits of AI to all member states, thus supporting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Morocco’s ambassador to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, also expressed support for the resolution. However, he warned of the potential dangers of the malicious use of this technology for global peace and security.

The resolution is eagerly awaited for its vote on March 21st, offering a historic opportunity to shape the future of AI and its impacts on global development.

Juste AKO.
