Mali : Dissolution of CMAS, a hard blow for Imam Mahmoud Dicko ?

The Coordination of Movements, Associations, and Sympathizers (CMAS) of Imam Mahmoud Dicko has been dissolved during the council of ministers in Mali for engaging in activities deemed contrary to its objectives and its status, announced the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga.

The council of ministers made this decision due to the « subversive » activities carried out by the patron of CMAS, Imam Mahmoud Dicko, which could potentially disrupt public order according to the official statement. The statement also indicates that this decision follows violations of the statutory provisions of CMAS and constitutes an infringement on the country’s higher interests.

Originally created with the aim of promoting social stability and peace, CMAS has been accused of turning into a political organ of destabilization, particularly following statements by its general coordinator openly criticizing the transitional authorities, especially after the postponement of the presidential election.

In a statement, CMAS reacted by stating that it « learned without surprise » of the decision by the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration. This dissolution represents a blow to Imam Mahmoud Dicko, who has been an influential figure in the Malian political landscape and who had mobilized numerous sympathizers through CMAS.

This decision also underscores the political tensions and security challenges that persist in Mali, especially in the context of a delicate political transition. The dissolution of CMAS marks a new chapter in the relationship between the government and political and social movements in the country, raising questions about the future of Imam Dicko and his supporters in the Malian political landscape.
