CAN 2025 : FIFA backs Morocco, what are the consequences for CAF ?

The FIFA has taken a stance in favor of Morocco and its organization of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), in a decision that marks a significant turning point in the relationship between the global football body and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

According to internal sources within the CAF, Morocco has been confirmed as the host of the 35th edition of the CAN, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 21, 2025. This decision comes despite controversies and heated debates, raising questions about the underlying motivations and interests, particularly regarding the position of European clubs.

Indeed, European clubs will not be required to release their African players during this period, which could negatively impact African national teams. Furthermore, adjusting the CAN schedule could pose additional challenges for African teams due to an already packed calendar, exacerbated by the scheduling of the 2026 World Cup in North America.

FIFA, under the leadership of Gianni Infantino, appears to have played a crucial role in this decision, favoring Morocco in its dispute with CAF over the competition dates. This FIFA intervention highlights its growing influence over CAF affairs, raising questions about the independence and sovereignty of the latter in governing African football. This development prompts reflection on the future of football governance on the African continent and the relationship between CAF and FIFA.
