Egypt: Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi re-elected without surprise

The results announced by the Egyptian electoral body on Monday 18 December following the presidential election in Egypt proclaim Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, the outgoing president, the winner.

Unsurprisingly, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has been re-elected with almost 90% of the vote for a third term.

According to the head of the electoral body, Hazem Badawy, Egyptians participated massively in this election, with a 66.8% turnout out of 67 million Egyptian voters. In his view, this was an unprecedented turnout.

Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who came to power in 2013, has ruled the country for 10 years, and according to the Egyptian constitution, this third term should be his last.

When he took power, the Egyptian president had the constitution amended, extending the limit from two to three consecutive terms, as well as the length of the mandate from 4 to 6 years.
