Niger: The CNSP condemns the “perfidious actions” of Antonio Guterres

In a statement read out on Friday 22 September 2023, the CNSP (National council for the safeguard of the homeland) denounced «the perfidious actions of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres».

According to the statement, Antonio Guterres is seeking «…to undermine any efforts to end the crisis» in the country.

The text refers in particular to the way in which Antonio Guterres “has blundered in the exercise of his mission by obstructing Niger’s full participation in the 78th session of the UN General Assembly”.

«Mr Guterres not only refused to take note of Niger’s official list of delegates (…), but above all acceded to the fanciful request by former foreign minister Hassoumi Massaoudou to revoke Niger’s permanent representative to the United Nations», the CNSP press release goes on to say.

Following these «perfidious actions», the CNSP and the government of the Republic of Niger «call the national and international community to witness…».

It should be noted that at this General Assembly, the ruling military regime sent its new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, who was the country’s representative to the UN before the coup on 26 July.
