Ghanaian influencer extradited to US over $8M romance scam

Frederick Kumi, a Ghanaian social media personality known as Abu Trica, has been extradited to the United States to face charges of defrauding elderly Americans through a romance scam. Prosecutors allege Kumi used artificial intelligence to craft fake online identities, targeting victims on social media and dating platforms. Authorities claim he built trust through intimate conversations before requesting money for fabricated emergencies, investments, or travel expenses.

Kumi denies all charges. If convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, he faces up to 20 years in prison. He arrived in the US on Thursday.

Barker-Vormawor accused Ghanaian authorities of bypassing judicial oversight and raised constitutional concerns.

Justice Minister Dominic Ayeni rejected the accusation, stating the court had previously dismissed Kumi’s habeas corpus application.

The minister confirmed he signed a surrender warrant Wednesday, and authorities executed the extradition Thursday, insisting due process was followed.

Kumi had long flaunted luxury cars and cash to over 100,000 Instagram followers, raising suspicions. US authorities intensified crackdowns on West African criminal networks targeting elderly Americans.

Last week, another extradited Ghanaian fraudster pleaded guilty in a US court. In December, a Nigerian ringleader received a 20-year sentence for laundering over $2 million.
