Football/ Ronaldo finally lifts Saudi League trophy as Al-Nassr end drought

The three-and-a-half-year of Cristiano Ronaldo waiting for a major Saudi domestic title is over. The 41-year-old scored twice on the final day as Al-Nassr beat Damac 4-1 to clinch their first championship since 2019, edging bitter rivals Al-Hilal.

Signed in December 2022 to thrust Saudi football onto the global stage, Ronaldo has now netted 129 goals across all competitions for the club.

The title completes a domestic treble for the Portuguese legend, who previously won league crowns in England, Spain, and Italy.

The race came down to a dramatic 1-1 draw between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal on 12 May; watched in over 180 countries where a last-minute own goal from goalkeeper Bento kept the title alive. Thursday’s victory secured Al-Nassr’s 11th league title.

The triumph provides relief after Al-Nassr surprisingly lost the AFC Champions League Two final to Gamba Osaka last Saturday.

With stars like Sadio Mane and a reinvigorated Ronaldo who recently scored his 100th Saudi Pro League goal the Riyadh side finally delivered on the promise of its blockbuster project.
