Tyla secures second Grammy, solidifying african music’s global rise

South African singer Tyla has clinched the Grammy for Best African Music Performance for the second consecutive year. Her winning track, “Push 2 Start,” triumphed over a field of heavyweights including Nigerian stars Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Davido, as well as Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo.

The 24-year-old, who first won in 2024 for her global phenomenon “Water,” expressed exhilaration following the Los Angeles ceremony. “This is insane… I’m so proud to be African,” she exclaimed, highlighting the growing prominence  of  the continent on music’s biggest stage.

Her victory sparked celebrations online, with “Congratulations Tyla” trending widely as fans, particularly in South Africa, hailed her achievement. The win underscores the vibrant and competitive landscape of African pop music.

In another highlight for South Africa, comedian Trevor Noah hosted the main Grammy ceremony for the sixth year running, further cementing the global influence of the nation’s entertainers.

The back-to-back wins of Tyla mark a significant moment in the ongoing international ascent of African artists.
