AFCON 2025/ Salah seals Egyptian escape in Afcon opener

Mohamed Salah delivered a stoppage-time winner to spare Egypt’s blushes in a 2-1 comeback victory over Zimbabwe in their Africa Cup of Nations opener. The Liverpool star, whose lack of recent club minutes showed in fading influence, swivelled to score a scuffed 91st-minute winner.

After Omar Marmoush’s superb equaliser cancelled out Prince Dube’s shock opener for Zimbabwe, Salah had the final say.

The goal marked a redemptive start for the “Egyptian King,” who is desperate to fill the major gap on his CV: An Afcon winner’s medal.

This tournament represents a stark contrast to 2022, when Salah left early injured amid accusations of prioritising club over country.

Now, fully invested, his late intervention underlines both Egypt’s reliance on him and his own burning quest for continental glory.
