Diplomacy/ Togo and Italy strengthen strategic partnership at Aqaba summit sidelines

Rome, Italy – President of Togo Faure Gnassingbé held a high-level meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, on the sidelines of the Aqaba Summit on West African Security.

The discussions served to strengthen the strategic partnership between Togo and Italy, with a focus on pressing global and regional security challenges.

The two leaders extensively reviewed their bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of security, sustainable development, and regional governance.

They also addressed the volatile situation in the Sahel and West Africa, where the rise of terrorism, cross-border crime, and violent extremism demands enhanced international synergy.

Prime Minister Meloni commended Togo’s active and balanced diplomacy, highlighting President Gnassingbé’s major role in crisis prevention and regional mediation, as well as his steadfast commitment to stability and peace on the African continent.

For his part, President Gnassingbé reaffirmed the willingness of Togo to work closely with Italy and other European partners to build a collective security architecture based on solidarity, training, and the development of local capabilities.

This meeting in Rome confirms Togo’s central place on the African and international diplomatic chessboard, underscoring the growing recognition of its pragmatic and humanist approach to managing contemporary security threats.
