IAEA: Togo assumes a role in global nuclear governance

Togo is taking a strategic step towards mastering its own destiny by joining the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2025-2027 period. Far beyond a diplomatic distinction, this accession represents a major shift in the Pan-African vision championed by the countryone of development based on science, energy autonomy, and technological appropriation.

In a world where access to energy has become a matter of sovereignty, Togo asserts its will to no longer depend on imposed solutions, but to participate in shaping the rules of the game.

This appointment comes amidst a national context of profound strategic refoundation, allowing the country to develop its energy sector.

The creation of the Atomic Energy Commission (CEAT) in January 2025 is a concrete illustration of this new direction: to train, innovate, and apply civilian nuclear technology to African realities in health, agriculture, and power generation—this is the new course.

The agreement concluded with the American company Nano Nuclear Energy for the deployment of micro-reactors marks a symbolic and practical break from the past.

Togo is exploring the technologies of tomorrow not as a spectator, but as a self-assured African pioneer.

By joining the IAEA in a governance position, the country gains an international platform to influence standards, defend its interests, and accelerate the implementation of transformative projects.

This is also a historic opportunity to redefine Africa’s role in the global governance of civilian nuclear power.

Togo, along with other Sahel states like Niger, is beginning to embody an alternative voice;  a free, technophile, and sovereigntist voice that asserts the right of African peoples to access clean, safe, and economically strategic energy.

Admittedly, challenges remain: consolidating the regulatory framework, strengthening technical capacities, and securing financing.

But this election sends a strong signal that Africa is no longer waiting for the world’s approval to innovate. It acts, it anticipates, it governs.
