Burkina Faso: World Bank grants $150 Million to fund “PACT DIGITAL” project

In Africa today, digital transformation is a priority for leaders as they initiate development, with many states actively seeking funding for these initiatives. In Burkina Faso, authorities are relying on World Bank assistance to successfully implement their digital strategy.

The country is poised to make a significant leap in its digital transformation process with the imminent launch of the Digital Transformation Acceleration Project (PACTDIGITAL).The Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) approved a $150 million loan from the World Bank, through the International Development Association (IDA), on Tuesday, June 11, to carry out this ambitious project.

The goal of PACTDIGITAL is to enhance the accessibility and adoption of digital services across the country, especially in rural areas and among marginalized groups.

« Specifically, the primary direct beneficiaries of the project are a large number of individuals, particularly women, youth, people with disabilities, internally displaced persons, host communities, and public employees, including civil servants, teachers, and trainers. Private companies, formal and informal training institutes, local incubators, and associations will also benefit. The project covers the entire national territory while considering security imperatives », stated Madame Aminata Zerbo/Sabane, Minister of Digital Transition, Posts, and Electronic Communications.

The PACTDIGITAL project builds on the accomplishments of the recently completed West Africa Regional Communications Infrastructure Project (PRICAO – BF) and the e-Burkina project. It will leverage these achievements to establish a foundation for future digital initiatives.

This strategic effort by Burkina Faso, supported by the World Bank, aims to bridge the digital divide, foster inclusive growth, and empower various sectors of society through enhanced digital infrastructure and services.
