DRC: H.E. Félix Tshisekedi holds emergency meeting over potential Ebola threat in North Kivu and Ituri
The Democratic Republic of Congo is on health alert again. On the night of Monday, May 18, President Félix Tshisekedi convened an emergency meeting at the African Union City following concerning reports in parts of North Kivu and Ituri provinces.
Several suspected cases have been reported and are under investigation for possible links to the Ebola virus.
The response of the President was immediate. Aware that an epidemic threat can quickly escalate into a major humanitarian crisis, Tshisekedi instructed the government to mobilize all necessary resources to strengthen the health response.
The twin priorities are to contain any potential spread of the virus and ensure rapid, effective care for exposed populations.
North Kivu and Ituri are already fragile due to years of security and humanitarian crises.
Difficult access to certain areas and community mistrust of health authorities pose additional challenges.
The President urged calm and responsibility, calling on Congolese to remain vigilant and strictly follow preventive measures recommended by health authorities.
