Burkina Faso turns a new page: Amir Abdou appointed head coach of the Etalons

The Burkinabe Football Federation has officially appointed Amir Abdou as the new head coach of the Etalons, ushering in an era marked by rigor and renewed ambition.

The 53-year-old Comorian technician succeeds Brama Traoré, who was dismissed following the elimination of Burkina Faso in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco (a loss against Côte d’Ivoire).

His arrival reflects a clear desire to revitalize a national team rich in talent but seeking consistency on the continental stage.

In a statement, the FBF specified that the selection of Abdou followed “a call for applications and a rigorous examination of various profiles,” highlighting his deep knowledge of African football and his experience in major competitions.

“At the end of a competitive process, the Comorian coach Abdou Amir has been officially chosen to take the reins of the senior national team,” the Federation indicated.

A coach of structured projects

Amir Abdou built a solid reputation on the continent during his tenure with the Comoros.

He led the island nation to a historic achievement by reaching the round of 16 at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations; their first-ever participation.

He continued his ascent with Mauritania, notably securing a significant victory against Algeria during the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2023, a testament to his ability to build competitive and disciplined teams.

At the club level, Abdou also distinguished himself by winning two Mauritanian league titles with FC Nouadhibou before a recent stint on the bench of Hassania d’Agadir in the Moroccan first division.

Recognized for his tactical rigor, defensive organization, and ability to foster strong collective cohesion, the technician arrives in Ouagadougou with a clear identity: to structure, stabilize, and make the Etalons more consistent in major tournaments.

Reviving an ambitious nation

Finalists at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and semi-finalists in 2017 and 2021, Burkina Faso remains a powerhouse in African football.

However, recent continental campaigns have revealed chronic inconsistency, hampering the ambitions of a generation rich in talent.

The mission of Abdou is therefore twofold: to restore a collective foundation to the team while progressively integrating a new wave of players alongside experienced core members.

His first matches at the helm of the Etalons are scheduled for the March 2026 international window, although opponents have yet to be confirmed.

Little time to convince

Between the qualifiers for the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2027 and the 2030 World Cup qualifiers, the calendar leaves little margin for error.

Popular expectations remain high, with supporters hoping to see Burkina Faso quickly re-establish itself among the continent’s major nations.
