Football: FIFA appoints Weah and Drogba to lead new anti-racism panel

FIFA has appointed football legends George Weah and Didier Drogba to a new 16-member panel of former players tasked with combating racism in the sport. The initiative, first announced at Fifa’s Congress in Thailand in May 2024, brings together ex-professionals from 14 countries to advise on anti-racism strategies, support educational programs, and drive structural reforms.
Weah, named the panel’s honorary captain, emphasized football’s power to “bring unity and development” and pledged to “promote the sport because football is life.”
Drogba, another iconic figure, joins him in the diverse group of men and women aiming to create tangible change.
FiFa President Gianni Infantino stated that the panel will push for a “shift in football culture,” ensuring measures against racism are “not just talked about, but actioned.”
He underscored the gravity of the issue, declaring racism and discrimination “crimes” that must be punished both within football and society at large.
The panel is expected to play a key role in shaping and implementing Fifa’s ongoing efforts to eradicate discrimination from stadiums and online platforms.
