Burkina Faso: Food self-sufficiency and the agricultural revolution, the result of President Ibrahim Traoré’s strategic vision

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is undergoing a profound transformation in the agricultural sector, with tangible results on the ground. The 2023–2025 Agro-Pastoral and Fisheries Offensive, launched by the government, serves as a strategic lever to achieve food self-sufficiency. Since taking office, the President has set clear priorities and implemented concrete actions to restore agriculture to its rightful place at the heart of the country’s economic development.

One of the key pillars of this initiative is the development and allocation of land to farmers—making access to farmland easier and creating better conditions for cultivation.

Another decisive step is the acquisition of hundreds of tractors. Modern agricultural machinery plays a crucial role in increasing yields, easing the burden of manual labor, and supporting large-scale production. Under President Traoré’s leadership, the government has worked hard to make this equipment accessible to local farmers through adapted financing mechanisms and partnerships with private stakeholders. This material support is vital to spark a genuine agricultural revolution in the country.

At the same time, the government has prioritized the supply of essential agricultural inputs to ensure abundant and sustainable harvests. Quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other key products are now more accessible thanks to subsidies and public-private partnerships. This approach encourages farmers to adopt modern techniques, diversify their crops, and maximize yields from cultivated land. Food self-sufficiency is no longer just a goal—it has become a necessity for national food security.

Beyond improved yields, this offensive also contributes to job creation and the structuring of the entire sector. Once dependent on food imports, Burkina Faso is now taking a strategic turn toward food independence, with positive impacts on the country’s economic and social stability. Driven by Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s vision, the nation is proving that ambitious agricultural policies, backed by strong political will and concrete action, can transform the economic landscape and pave the way for a more prosperous future for generations to come.
