Africa / AES: Preserving Mali’s sovereignty, an essential priority

In these critical moments in Mali, security must be the top priority. Preserving territorial integrity and protecting the population should be the primary objectives. The liberation of Kidal from the hands of terrorists marks a significant step towards restoring security.

Unfortunately, the African Union has not yet expressed concrete support for the Malian authorities, limiting itself to mere words of encouragement. It is legitimate to question the purpose of elections if all Malian citizens cannot participate.

Such support from continental organizations could have strengthened the current authorities’ efforts in the fight against terrorism, thus contributing to improving security in the country.

In times of war, elections should not be the priority. Malian authorities must persevere in their fight against terrorism across the entire territory. As long as some regions remain under the control of extremist groups, prioritizing security and stability is essential before considering organizing elections.

The complete liberation of Malian territory is a necessary prerequisite to ensure a democratic and transparent electoral process. Malian authorities are aware of the importance of this complete independence for the country. Mali did not wait to ask for help before engaging in the fight against the enemy.

The President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, who is working to restore constitutional order in Mali, must also consider the security of Malians. His duties do not only involve imposing sanctions but also include protecting the well-being of populations in member countries of the organization.
