DRC: Judith Suminwa intensifies consultations for government formation before may in accordance with president Tshisekedi’s expectations
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), consultations continue for the formation of a new government, in line with the expectations of the Head of State, President Félix Tshisekedi. Prime Minister Judith Suminwa has been leading these discussions since the weekend of April 13-14, 2024, first meeting with the informant, Augustin Kabuya, then with the presidium of the Sacred Union, the ruling political platform, before broadening the discussions to include other political actors this week.
According to reports, during these meetings, Judith Suminwa places particular importance on the future structure of the government, focusing on the need to reduce the cost of institutions. To achieve this, the Prime Minister envisages a significant reduction in the size of the government, which had 57 members in the previous legislature.
The criteria for selecting future ministers are also at the heart of the discussions. President Félix Tshisekedi demands experienced, honest candidates who represent gender, youth, and regional diversity. Each political grouping is invited to submit three candidates for each ministerial position within a 48-hour deadline.
As a former Minister of Planning, Judith Suminwa emphasizes the execution of the national budget, particularly regarding the investment budget. The national development plan and the development program for the 145 territories occupy a central place on her agenda.
In parallel, discussions focus on garnering support from members of parliament for the government’s program, highlighting the importance of political cohesion for the success of the forthcoming reforms.
