Togo / President Faure Gnassingbé and his commitment to the Togolese people : A crucial initiative to overcome the energy crisis
Since the beginning of the year, Togo has been severely affected by the energy crisis plaguing the West African sub-region. However, thanks to President Faure Gnassingbé’s unwavering commitment to his people and his constant concern for their well-being, the country has been witnessing a gradual return to normalcy in recent weeks.
The Minister Delegate for Energy, Mila Aziable, announced a crucial initiative to address this crisis : the use of alternative fuels to natural gas, the supply of which lies at the heart of the problem. This bold decision reflects the Togolese government’s commitment to ensuring access to electricity for households and industries, even in the most challenging times.
Togo, primarily supplied with natural gas from Nigeria, faces major challenges in terms of supply. Daily demand for gas is estimated at 35.000 million BTUs per day, but supplies are often insufficient or even non-existent, leading to high production costs and frequent power outages.
To address this critical situation, Minister Aziable recently hosted her counterparts from member countries of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) in Lomé. This meeting aimed to develop gas supply strategies to overcome the sub-region’s energy deficit. This initiative demonstrates the Togolese government’s willingness to work closely with its regional partners to find sustainable solutions to the energy crisis.
