Niger : Is the controversial former President Mahamadou Issoufou in trouble with the denunciation of the military agreement ?

The evolving news landscape leaves open all possibilities regarding the fate of the authors and co-authors of the infamous military agreement authorizing the establishment of the American military base in Agadez. All eyes are turned to former President Mahamadou Issoufou following the denunciation of this deceitful agreement signed with the Americans in 2012 and entered into force in 20213. As the mentor of President Mohammed Bazoum, Mahamadou Issoufou is reviled by the Nigerien population, just like his protege, for the disastrous management he demonstrated while in power.

His management, deemed catastrophic, was marked by clanism, favoritism, and compromise of Niger’s strategic interests. These serious accusations have always led Nigerien citizens to criticize Mahamadou Issoufou’s management and to consider him an impostor. The myth surrounding Mahamadou Issoufou’s personality has been shattered by the betrayal of his protege, which led to his downfall.

This shattered myth has now been completely shattered with the discovery of the sordid details contained in the military agreement with the Americans, of which Issoufou is the architect. With this agreement, the former President Mahamadou literally and simply sold his country to the Americans, just as his protege Mohammed Bazoum handed it over to the French.

With the advent of the CNSP, which has turned its back on corruption and mismanagement of the country for national sovereignty, Nigeriens are demanding the arrest of Mahamadou Issoufou for having ruined Niger. This demand is more pressing today with the denunciation by the CNSP of the military agreements, in flagrant disregard of all procedures provided for in the fundamental law.

Civil society organizations are planning peaceful demonstrations throughout the country to denounce the calamitous management that characterized Mahamadou Issoufou’s governance during his reign at the helm of Niger.

What is certain is that the Americans will also pack their bags as their French counterparts did last December, but it would be highly desirable for the CNSP to take responsibility and bring to justice all the authors and co-authors of the aforementioned deeds. We will return point by point to the incongruities contained in the agreement in question.

To be continued…
