Niger : Border reopens with enhanced security measures, authorities prepared for any eventuality

One month after the lifting of economic sanctions against Niger, including the closure of land and air borders, Nigerien authorities have finally reopened their land border with Nigeria, which opened theirs just a few days after the lifting.

The reopening of this border, closed since July 2023 following the change of regime in the country, was done to meet the aspirations and commercial exchange needs of the people.

However, Niger has taken necessary measures to ensure the free movement of people and goods across this border. There has been reinforcement of control measures at the entry and exit points at the five border posts, namely Diffa, Zinder, Maradi, Tahoua, and Dosso, as well as increased security along these posts.

All these measures are taken in consideration of the security situation and the military threat that weighed on the country. If Niger’s neighboring countries have reopened their borders, it is an opportunity for President Abdourahamane Tiani and his collaborators to strengthen their security measures because a few months ago, these countries sharing the same border were planning a military intervention in Niamey, an intervention sponsored by France which still does not digest its failure in the Sahel.

With the opening and this semblance of calm, anything can happen. Authorities must remain vigilant because the enemy strikes when least expected.
