Sahel/AES : The troubling reversal in Algeria’s Sahelian policy raises several questions

The recent attacks by Algerian government media against the countries of the Alliance of the Sahel States (AES), Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, have raised troubling questions about Algeria’s true commitment to the Sahel region. This unexpected shift calls into question Algeria’s credibility as a reliable partner in the fight against terrorism and instability in the Sahel.

For years, Algeria has positioned itself as a key supporter of initiatives aimed at resolving the crises shaking the Sahel region. International meetings and gatherings have been held on Algerian soil with the aim of finding sustainable solutions to the security and socio-economic challenges facing AES countries. However, the recent media attacks against these same countries cast doubt on the sincerity of this commitment.

Algerian government media have taken a hostile and blind stance against AES countries, accusing them of various unfounded wrongdoings. This sudden reversal raises legitimate questions about Algeria’s real motivations and the nature of its relations with Sahel actors.

Has it always been an unwavering supporter of terrorist groups operating in the region, or is it playing a hypocritical game by pretending to be an ally of AES countries while engaging in hostile actions against them?

This flip-flop by Algerian media highlights the complex and sometimes contradictory interests undermining Algeria’s foreign policy. While the country has long been perceived as an influential actor in promoting peace and stability in the Sahel, its recent actions call this image into question. The hostile statements by Algerian media undermine regional cooperation efforts and compromise progress in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

It is imperative that Algeria clarifies its position and reaffirms its commitment to the security and prosperity of the Sahel. Media attacks against AES countries only fuel divisions and instability in the region, undermining efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous future for all Sahel residents.

AES authorities are now forewarned; they must take responsibility for these kinds of behaviors, which often reveal the hidden intentions of any living being on Earth.

To be continued…
