Burkina Faso : Launch of the National Internal Security Strategy (NISS) 2024-2028

Burkina Faso takes a new step in consolidating its national security with the official launch of the development works for the National Internal Security Strategy (The NISS 2024-2028). This initiative, which comes after the adoption of the national security policy in March 2023, demonstrates the country’s firm commitment to addressing the persistent security challenges on its territory.

The launch ceremony took place on Friday, February 9th, 2024, in Ouagadougou, under the presidency of Émile Zerbo, Minister of Territorial Administration, Decentralization, and Security (MATDS), represented by his secretary-general. This event marks the beginning of a crucial process aimed at defining priorities and actions to strengthen the country’s internal security over the next four years.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has faced a particularly complex security situation, characterized by recurring attacks from armed terrorist groups in certain regions of the country. This threat, similar to that faced by its neighbors Mali and Niger, has had dramatic consequences on humanitarian and social fronts.

In addition to loss of life, these attacks have led to massive population displacement, the closure of many state structures, and the development of organized transnational crime.

The NISS 2024-2028 aims to address these challenges by developing a comprehensive and coordinated approach to internal security, taking into account humanitarian, social, and economic dimensions.

Building on the achievements of the previous national security policy, this strategy aims to strengthen the capacities of security forces, improve governance and coordination among various stakeholders, and promote sustainable development in areas affected by insecurity.

Through this proactive approach, Burkina Faso affirms its determination to protect its citizens and ensure the stability and prosperity of the entire country.
