CAN 2023 : Will Senegal’s Coach Aliou Cissé Resign ?
After Senegal’s elimination in the round of 16 at the AFCON, Aliou Cissé is expected to leave his position as the national team coach.
Coach Aliou Cissé may no longer lead Senegal’s national team. After nine years of experience, the highly respected coach may consider resigning. However, it is not yet clear whether this decision comes from him or if the federation will push him to resign.
The information about a possible resignation seems to have been supported by a statement released on Wednesday by Sané Malang, a Senegalese journalist. He categorically states that Cissé will not continue his mission. While still the reigning African champion, Aliou Cissé will therefore step down a few days after the Teranga Lions were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the round of 16.
Senegal was eliminated in the round of 16 (by Ivory Coast on penalties), marking the worst result under Cissé’s leadership. In addition to winning the African title in 2022, he had also led the team to the final of the 2019 edition in Egypt.
With the World Cup qualifiers starting in June, the Senegalese Football Federation will need to quickly find a replacement if Aliou Cissé decides to step down.
