Algeria : The Role of Algerian Foreign Policy in Conflict Resolution

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, praised Algeria’s foreign policy during a meeting with the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, as part of the 10th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa (Oran Process 2023). Lacroix highlighted the extensive cooperation between the UN and Algeria, stating that it would further intensify in the future.

«The cooperation between Algeria and the UN is extremely dense, and it will be even denser with Algeria’s upcoming presence on the Security Council for 2024-2025», he stated after the meeting.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2024-2025 term, Algeria has prioritized resolving conflicts and crises in Africa and the Arab world. During the meeting, discussions covered the situations in the Middle East, the Sahel, and Western Sahara.

Lacroix expressed gratitude for the support of Algeria  in the context of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and discussed challenges and prospects regarding the security and political situation in the Sahel.

It’s worth noting that in early December, Russian President Vladimir Putin characterized Algerian diplomacy as balanced during a ceremony.
