DRC: Officers rewarded for their bravery during the recent foiled coup d’état

May 19, 2024, marks a significant chapter in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). On this date, the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) displayed remarkable courage in thwarting a coup attempt.

In recognition of their bravery, President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo awarded the prestigious “Cross of Military Bravery with a Bronze Star” to two FARDC officers.

At an official ceremony, President Tshisekedi lauded the officers for their courage and dedication, emphasizing their crucial role in protecting the nation.

These honors not only acknowledge individual acts of valor but also pay tribute to all armed forces working to ensure the country’s security and stability.

Major General Sylvain Ekenge Bomusa, spokesperson for the Congolese army, was among the first to announce the failure of the coup attempt in a solemn broadcast on national television.

He confirmed that the FARDC swiftly and effectively neutralized the threat, leading to the apprehension and subsequent military trial of several individuals involved.

In recent weeks, the trial of those implicated in the coup attempt has commenced in military court.

This judicial process is closely monitored by both citizens and international observers, as it represents a critical moment for justice and democratic principles in the DRC.

The proceedings aim to uncover the full details of the May 19 events and ensure fair accountability for those responsible.
