Togo: Awareness campaign for peaceful elections: CNLPAL calls for a democratic process without weapons

The National Commission for Combating the Proliferation, Circulation, and Illicit Trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons (CNLPAL) has embarked on a comprehensive awareness campaign aimed at fostering peaceful elections during Togo’s legislative and regional elections.

Operating under the slogan «Committing to Arms-Free Elections», this initiative is geared towards ensuring an electoral process devoid of armed violence.

The campaign’s focal point was Sokodé, the capital of the Central region, where the local populace was sensitized to the paramount importance of maintaining peace and steering clear of violent confrontations throughout the electoral period.

The primary aim was to convey a resolute message of non-violence to all stakeholders involved in the electoral process, thereby averting potential tensions and conflicts.

Participants hailing from diverse sectors of Togolese society were encouraged to embrace civic-minded and responsible conduct throughout the electoral cycle.

This encompassed refraining from clashes among candidates and their political supporters, while actively promoting constructive dialogue and mutual respect.

The awareness drive also encompassed educational sessions delving into the perils of armed violence during elections and the critical role of citizen participation in guaranteeing a tranquil electoral process.

This holistic approach sought to deepen everyone’s understanding of the pivotal issues surrounding peace and stability during elections.

Moreover, CNLPAL underscored the imperative of preempting potential threats emanating from terrorism and violent extremism, which could disrupt the electoral landscape and undermine national security.

Participants were thus urged to maintain vigilance and collaborate closely to uphold a safe and secure environment during this pivotal period.

By kickstarting this campaign in Sokodé, CNLPAL initiated a nationwide tour aimed at galvanizing the entire nation ahead of the impending elections. Political representatives, community leaders, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders were implored to actively contribute towards fostering peace and stability during this crucial democratic juncture for Togo.
