Mali : Cancellation of the Algiers Peace Agreement, Mali values its security and sovereignty
The Malian Ministry in charge of territorial administration, through a statement dated Thursday, January 25, 2025, announced the immediate termination of the « Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali stemming from the Algiers process », abbreviated as the « Algiers Peace Agreement ».
This agreement, signed in 2015 in Bamako between the Republic of Mali and the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), aimed to end the Mali conflict. However, it is now deemed impracticable by the Malian government for several reasons.
Firstly, the transitional government in Mali denounces the change in posture of some armed groups that signed the agreement, which have now become a terrorist threat to Colonel Assimi GOÏTA’s country. These troublemakers are currently being pursued by the Malian justice system.
Secondly, the transitional Malian authorities criticize the indifference or incapacity of the international mediation in enforcing the obligations of the agreement, despite Mali’s government repeatedly bringing to the attention of the international mediation the situation of violation or non-compliance with the obligations of the agreement by the signatory armed groups.
Thirdly, the Malian government’s statement condemns acts of hostility and the instrumentalization of the Agreement by the leader of the international mediation, the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The authorities of this country, which led the mediation that resulted in the Algiers Agreement, are accused in another statement, with examples provided, of interfering in Mali’s internal affairs, engaging in unfriendly acts, and acts of hostility.
