Togo/China : Strengthening cooperation between Lome and Beijing

The Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, continues his African tour with a significant stop in Lome. This visit to Togolese soil is part of a longstanding tradition, marking the 34th consecutive year in which the Chinese Foreign Minister chooses Africa as the first destination abroad in the year.

The talks between Mr. Yi and the Togolese government scheduled for Wednesday affirm the close ties between China and Togo. Politically and economically, Lome and Beijing maintain strong relations. China has provided concessional funding and various donations, including for the construction of official buildings, stadiums, and hospitals. Chinese construction companies also play an active role in the renovation of Togo’s road network.

A key element of this cooperation lies in China’s interest in Lome’s approach to returning to African values and Pan-Africanism, a strategy recently outlined by Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey. African leaders appreciate China’s position, characterized by respect for the sovereignty of states and a policy of non-interference in domestic affairs.

Beyond the African sphere, China views Africa as a key partner to strengthen its international influence. Seeking to become a major player on the continent, in the Middle East, and elsewhere in the world, China pursues a diplomatic strategy aimed at establishing respectful and mutually beneficial partnerships. Sino-Togolese cooperation aligns with this broader vision of China’s growing presence on the international stage.
