DRC : Flooding, Félix Tshisekedi calls on the government to quickly take charge of the victims

Twelve provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are facing flooding due to the rising waters of the Congo River.

The affected provinces include Kasaï-Central, Equateur, Kongo Central, Sud-Ubangi, Lomami, Tshuapa, Kasaï, Kwilu, Mongala, Mai-Ndombe, Tshopo, and the city of Kinshasa. These floods have caused significant damage, including loss of lives, devastated fields, blocked roads, flooded houses, and landslides.

In response to this situation, President Félix Tshisekedi has reaffirmed his commitment to stand with the affected populations. He has instructed the government to take urgent measures to relieve the affected populations. Additionally, quick action is needed to prevent and address potential epidemics in the affected areas.

« To respond to the emergency caused by this flood, the Government of DRC, under the supervision of the Prime Minister, has been instructed to take all necessary measures to ensure assistance to the affected population and, at the same time, to remain vigilant to prevent the possible outbreak of epidemics », reported government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya.

The Congolese president has also expressed condolences to the grieving families and assured the populations that measures are being taken. Furthermore, the Head of State has called for « responsible planning and climate-resilient infrastructure » in the face of these challenges.
